A lot of research and time is put into purchasing a new TV, yet many homeowners do not consider what can happen when their new flat panel TV is not properly secured.

The evolution of the home TV from the boxy CRTs of the late 1990s through to today’s all-singing, all-dancing Ultra High Definition masterpieces is a wonder to behold. A 50” LED TV, impossibly thin with a picture quality that truly lives up to the moniker ‘Home Theater’ is within the reach of most monthly pay packets.

Yet in this new Televisual utopia where we have the freedom to deploy a flat screen TV in almost any room in the home, we’ve lost site of a fundamental – making sure those TVs are secured. Its great being able to enjoy movies on a 60” screen in your bedroom, however the fact is this – every two weeks, a child dies when a TV, piece of furniture or appliance falls on them.

Peerless-AV's StabilisAnd, unfortunately, accident numbers continue to rise with over 43,000 consumers injured via tip over incidents per year, with 66% of accidents occurring within the home.

Oftentimes, homeowners may place a large TV; say a 55”, on a 24” x 24” table, creating an unstable foundation. Even with today’s technology, the average family TV weighs anywhere from 35 lbs. up to 75 lbs. and when pushed or vibrations occur within the home, these displays can fall, which can put small, young children in great danger.

Whilst that new big screen may not weigh anywhere near as much as its CRT forebear, if falling from, say a set of drawers, that falling weight can prove deadly.

Wall mounting is the safest option in preventing a TV tip over incident, however when that is not possible or desired, we developed the Stabilis™ Home Screen Safety Kit as an effective universal solution for safely securing flat panel TVs.

Fitting a full range of LCD, LED and plasma models up to 60″, the kit secures the TV to a piece of furniture (wood, metal or glass) or wall. Not only does the Stabilis prevent fall-forward accidents, it also stops the TV being pushed back and allows for continued right to left swivel where the TV is supplied with a pedestal stand. The Stabilis kit offers a sense of security with a rigid clamping system that may also deter the opportunist burglar.

To avoid TV tip over accidents, homeowners should also look to:

  • Anchor furniture to the wall or the floor.
  • Place TVs on sturdy low bases or anchor the furniture and TV to the base with the TV placed as far back on the furniture as possible.
  • Keep remote controls, toys, and other items that might attract children off of TV stands and furniture.
  • Keep TV and/or cable cords out of reach of children.
  • Supervise children in rooms where these safety tips have not been followed.
