Sony DMPC dvLED video wall

Case Study Overview: Sony DMPC

The Virtual Production Lab at the Digital Media Production Center (DMPC) in Los Angeles is Sony’s state-of-the-art facility that provides production managers, cinematographers, and other industry professionals an opportunity to test Sony’s top-of-the-line cinematography equipment.

Ahead of its grand opening in May of 2023, the installation team at Peerless-AV®, a longtime partner of Sony, was tasked with a collaborative project to design, engineer, and create a custom mounting system for a new dvLED video wall.

The large-scale dvLED video wall was a modern alternative to a green screen, making it essential that it was multi-faceted and included both a flat and curved section for a more versatile digital backdrop to be used by production teams.

The project involved intricate planning and precise execution. Peerless-AV created a unique SEAMLESS Bespoke dvLED Mounting System to support the immersive dvLED video wall in the space. The custom mounting system integrated flat and curved segments seamlessly. This will ensure high-quality visuals and minimal color shift, which is critical for camera capture.

The installation process was swift, taking only ten days—five days for the mounting frame and five for the Crystal LED cabinets. The final setup includes 162 Crystal LED B-series cabinets, providing over 13 million pixels of resolution, which is more than 1.5 times that of 4K resolution.

The lab’s grand opening event, attended by key Sony executives and industry professionals, showcased the impressive new facility and underscored Sony’s commitment to advancing virtual production technologies. The successful collaboration between Sony and Peerless-AV highlights the lab’s role in pushing the boundaries of cinematic production and offering a cutting-edge environment for testing and innovation.
